The Interview:

You never get a second chance to make a first impression!

Some points to remember are:

  • Smiling is one of the ways which may help in making a good first impression.
  • Do not forget to have a  firm handshake.
  • Eye contact without glaring is a way of showing your confidence.
  • Don’t talk too much. Always remember that communication is a two-way thing so give them a chance. Also don't interrupt the interviewer when he/she is talking. Give him/her a full chance to talk. One of the most common mistakes a candidate can make when interviewing is talking too much. It is important to listen to the question asked and answer that question. Keep your answers to two to three minutes at the most. When you limit your time, you tend to stay more focused.

In the early part of the interview try and find out what the job role is.  What type of team will you potentially be working with?  What are the key skills they require?

If the interviewer is talking about the role and themselves to begin with then it is a good start.  Interviewers can be more nervous than the applicants and finding out about the job can be an easy way to relax both parties.  If the interviewer does not want to conduct the interview this way, then do not worry.

When you have got the key job attributes, you will be able to relate yourself and experience to the job.  This will make you far more likely to be offered the position.

In the last ten minutes of the interview or the summary part of the interview make a special effort.  This is the time when the interviewer remembers most and makes up his or her mind.  Maybe you can ask the question 'Are there any skills that you feel I do not have?'  You would be surprised how many people leave the interview with the client not knowing that they can do the job.

Obvious Questions To Know:

  • What are your strengths? Easy - Enthusiastic, wants to learn new things etc.
  • What are your weaknesses? Take care not to run yourself down.  Many people turn a strength such as willingness to work long hours or wanting to get the job exactly right and use it as a weakness.
  • How would your friends or others see you?  This just means describe yourself honestly.  If your answer is greatly different than your own account, then this will cause uncertainty.
